The painting & walls problems we get called about most
A patch that shows more than the hole did
Skip the feathering and you get a lighter square that catches the light from across the room. We sand it back well past the patch so it disappears, not just gets covered.
A water stain bleeding back through
Paint straight over a water mark and the tannins come back within weeks. We seal with a stain-block primer first and chase the leak so it does not return.
Hairline cracks reopening every winter
Seasonal movement pulls the same cornice and skirting lines apart year after year. We fill with flexible gap filler, not just plaster, so the crack stays closed through the next frost.
What painting and wall repairs actually cover
From a single patched hole to a full room repaint, we handle the prep, plaster and paint that make walls look right. We fill cracks and gaps, patch Gyprock plasterboard, sand back and prime, then finish with a clean coat.
Preparation is most of the job. A wall that has been filled, feathered and primed takes paint evenly and holds it for years. A wall that has been rolled over without prep flashes in raking light and starts lifting at the edges within a season. It is the difference you cannot see on day one and cannot miss by year two.
Canberra’s frost-and-dry swing is hard on both interior and exterior surfaces. Plaster moves, hairline cracks open along cornice lines and skirtings, and exterior timber and render take a beating from UV and frost in the same twelve months. We advise on the right products and the right timing for your walls rather than painting whatever the weather is doing that week.
Common problems we fix
Holes and knocks in plasterboard. Door handles, removalist trolleys, a chair leg going backwards. We cut back to a sound edge, back the cavity, fill with joint compound over paper tape, then feather the sanding well beyond the patch. Skim coating goes on where the surrounding wall has an uneven texture to match.
Cracks along cornices and skirtings. Seasonal movement opens the same lines every year. Acrylic gap filler and Selleys No More Gaps handle the flexible joints; anything structural gets flagged rather than filled over.
Water stains on ceilings. These need a stain-block primer before any top coat, or the mark bleeds straight back through. We also look for where the water came in, often a blocked gutter or a lifted flashing, so the repair holds.
Damaged external corners. Knocked corner bead on an exposed wall edge gets cut out and replaced rather than filled, so the line stays straight.
Faded and chalky exterior surfaces. Sun-facing weatherboard and render lose their coat first. We wash back, prime bare patches and recoat with an exterior acrylic rated for UV and frost exposure.
What you get
Every job is quoted at a fixed price before we start. Drop sheets go down, dust gets vacuumed rather than swept, and you get the site back tidy. If the job turns out to be smaller than it looked in the photos, we say so.

Prep done properly
Cracks filled, edges feathered, primer where it is needed. Skipping prep is why cheap paint jobs flash and peel within a year.
Colour matched
We match existing wall colour for touch-ups so a repair blends instead of announcing itself in a lighter square.
Built for the Canberra climate
Frost-and-dry swings are hard on interior and exterior surfaces. We pick products and timing that hold up here.
One visit, one invoice
Patching, painting and any other jobs on your list get done in the same booking, priced together.
How does painting & walls work?
Send photos
Email a couple of photos and your suburb. For most painting and patching jobs that is enough to price it without a site visit.
Fixed quote
You get a fixed price covering prep, materials and paint. It does not move unless you change the scope.
Prep and paint
Drop sheets down, fill, sand, prime, then coat. The preparation is what separates a lasting job from a cheap one.
Clean finish
Edges cut in properly, dust vacuumed, sheets lifted. You should not be able to tell where the repair was.
Patch and paint with us vs a specialist painter
Small wall repairs sit awkwardly between trades. Here is how a handyman booking compares with calling a painting firm for the same work.
| Canberra Handyman Services | Booking a painting firm | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum job size | Happy to do a single patch | Often a minimum half-day or full-room |
| Who does the plaster repair | Same person, same visit | Frequently subcontracted or excluded |
| Other jobs on the same visit | Gutters, doors and decks in the same booking | Painting only |
| Price certainty | Fixed price agreed before we start | Commonly quoted per hour plus materials |
| Lead time for small work | Usually within the same week | Small jobs queued behind full repaints |

What customers say about our painting & walls
5.0 average across 57+ Google reviews
"Steve gave me a fixed price on the phone and it didn't budge. Patched two walls, rehung a sticking door and cleared the gutters all in one visit. Turned up on time and left the place spotless."
"Two big holes from a removalist trolley. Patched, sanded and painted in an afternoon and I genuinely can't find where they were."
"Ceiling had a brown water ring for years. He primed it with a stain block first and it hasn't come back through. Honest advice, fair price."
Painting & Walls FAQs
How much does wall patching and painting cost in Canberra?
Most standard jobs run $150–$180 depending on how much preparation the wall needs. A single patch and touch-up sits at the lower end; a full room repaint or exterior work with stain blocking sits at the top. You get a fixed price before we start.
Can you patch a hole in plasterboard so it doesn't show?
Yes. We cut back to sound edges, back the hole, fill with joint compound over paper tape, then feather the sanding out well past the patch so there is no visible ridge. After a colour-matched coat you should not be able to pick where it was.
Will a water stain come back through new paint?
It will if you paint straight over it. Water stains and smoke need a stain-block primer first, otherwise the tannins bleed through the top coat within weeks. We always seal before coating, and we find the source of the leak first so it does not happen again.
What paint do you use?
Dulux or Taubmans in most cases, with an exterior-grade acrylic on anything exposed to UV and frost. If you have a colour on hand or a preferred brand, we will use it.
Do I need to move furniture and cover the floor?
No. We bring drop sheets and move what needs moving. Clearing the small stuff off shelves and benches beforehand speeds things up, but that is all we ask.
What time of year is best for exterior painting in Canberra?
Spring and autumn. Canberra frosts stop paint curing properly overnight and mid-summer heat can dry a surface too fast. We plan exterior work around the forecast so it cures the way it should.
Can you do the painting at the same time as other jobs?
That is the usual way we work. Patch and paint alongside a gutter clean, a sticking door or a deck oil in one visit, all on one invoice, which works out cheaper than booking separate trades.
Still not sure?
Call and ask. We would rather tell you it is a ten-minute fix than sell you a job you do not need.
