What a handyman actually costs in the ACT
Most standard handyman jobs across the Canberra metro area land between $150 and $180. That covers the bulk of what people call about: patching a hole and painting over it, clearing gutters on a single-storey home, rehanging a door that has started to bind, assembling a wardrobe, resealing a shower.
That range is a real range, not a starting point that climbs once someone is standing in your hallway. Where a job sits inside it depends on three things: how long it takes, how much material it needs, and how hard the spot is to get to.
Bigger pieces of work are priced on their own terms. A deck sand and oil is quoted by area. A full bathroom regrout depends on how many square metres of wall and floor are involved. Painting and wall repairs can run from a single patch at the bottom of the range up to a multi-room repaint quoted as its own job. In every case the number is worked out and agreed before anyone starts.
The number you are told is the number you pay
A fixed-price quote is agreed before work begins and does not move unless the scope does. If something genuinely unexpected turns up behind a wall, we stop and talk to you first rather than adding it to the invoice.
Hourly rates versus fixed prices
Plenty of tradespeople quote an hourly rate. It sounds transparent and it usually is not, because as the customer you carry all the risk: if the job takes twice as long as expected, you pay twice as much, and you have no way of judging in advance whether that will happen.
A fixed price moves that risk back where it belongs. We work out how long the job will take, quote accordingly, and wear it if we have judged it badly. That is a fair trade for the certainty it gives you.

The one thing to check when comparing quotes is what is included. A price that excludes materials, rubbish removal or the tip run is not really the price. Ours includes them.
Why one visit with four jobs beats four visits
Here is the part that saves the most money and gets thought about the least.
A meaningful share of any trade call-out covers getting there, unloading, setting up, packing down and driving away again. That cost exists whether the job takes twenty minutes or three hours. Book four separate visits and you pay it four times.
Book the same four jobs into one visit and you pay it once. That is the whole reason multi-trade handyman work is cheaper than hiring specialists for a short list: a painter for the patch, a roofer for the gutter clean and a carpenter for the sticking door means three quotes, three bookings, three lots of setup and three invoices to chase.
It is worth keeping a running list. Most households have five or six small things that have been annoying them for months, none of them individually worth a phone call. Together they are one efficient booking.
What affects the price of a job
Access. A gutter you can reach from a stable, flat approach costs less to clear than one over a steep slope or above a two-storey drop. Same job, different setup.
Preparation. In painting especially, the visible work is the small part. A wall that needs filling, sanding and priming before the first coat takes longer than one that needs a coat.
Materials. Paint, grout, timber, fixings and hardware vary. A colour-matched grout or a specific exterior-grade paint costs more than a generic equivalent, and we will say so rather than quietly substituting.
Waste. Green waste, old timber, packaging and rubble have to go somewhere. A tip run is part of the quote for jobs that generate it.
Scope creep. The single biggest cause of a price moving is the job growing. Deciding on the day to do the whole room instead of the one wall is a change in scope, and it gets re-quoted openly.
How to get an accurate quote quickly
Three things get you a firm price fast:
- Your suburb. It sets travel and confirms you are inside the service area.
- A plain-words description. “There is a hole in the hallway wall about the size of a fist” is more useful than technical language.
- A couple of photos. One wide shot showing the context, one close-up of the problem. For most jobs this removes the need for a site visit entirely.
Add a rough timeline if you have one, and mention anything else on your list even if you are not sure it is worth doing. It usually is once someone is already there.
